The History of Kendo
The form of martial art known as Kendo is perhaps one of the best known stories in the martial arts today. From Japan during the Kamakura period, Japanese sword fighting became extremely common among Samurai warriors and other military people. During this time, Kendo was created under very heavy and powerful influence of Zen Buddhism, this is perhaps the reason that the principles and ideology that run in the martial art Kendo is so strong.
Zen Buddhism considers the division between life and death of a mere concept or delusion, that life and death are not as far apart as humans think. Using this philosophy, samurai warriors were able to confidently off fear in a sword fight or battle and often win.
Because that Kendo was associated with the fighting styles of the Samurai warriors, the popularity of this martial art form grew amazingly fast. Many martial arts schools (Or dojo) opened soon after starting to teach students who want to learn Kendo. These schools of martial arts was the basis of Kendo as we know it today and many schools reflects the illumination of a single instructor or individual forms and the theory of the struggle.
Although there were many teachers share their knowledge Kendo individual students across the country, Kendo changed very little since its original creation. Most of the techniques (also known as kata) have not changed and almost none of the concepts and philosophies have changed in Kendo. It is perhaps these philosophies that have kept the art form on solid ground.
Kendo is considered most modernized by a man called Sirozaemon Kunisato Naganuma, who introduced the bamboo staff called war full body armor and shinai (known as Bogu) Kendo schools across the country. The growing popularity of Kendo increasingly since the introduction of safer training techniques and it was during Century 18 that Kendo started becoming known in countries other than Japan. After developing safer ways to practice with the use of the shinai and bogu, Kendo became the martial art form as we know it today.
Like other forms of martial arts, kendo uses a belt ranking system structure known as the kyu and dan grades and has existed for centuries since it was used in several earlier forms of martial arts. Using these classification structures allows a Kendo teacher to assess student's skill level so he or she can begin to learn new techniques and practice their skills on opponents equally qualified. This type of system has existed since the creation of Judo by Jigoro Kano.
The only difference between the levels of skill in kendo and other arts martial is that there is an obvious difference between the students, regardless of skill levels are granted, no belts or uniforms of different colors to distinguish one student lower level of a higher being. During 1970, the International Kendo Federation was formed and since that year, the International Kendo Championships have been held three times a year for students who wish to compete.
